Are you an Emerging Entrepreneur?

Emerging Entrepreneurs is Hispanic Unity’s Small Business program. Hispanic Unity recognized more than a dozen years ago the need for entrepreneurship education and support for many who are looking to start or reinvent their current businesses. To this end, Hispanic Unity redesigned the program in 2012 and partnered with the experts of Broward SCORE to provide a comprehensive program based on Broward SCORE’s 5 Simple Steps model for starting and running a successful business.

The standalone workshops are listed below. The next series of the 5 Simple Steps program workshops begin July 26th (in English -- click here to see this cycle schedule) and on August 2nd (in Spanish -- click here to see this cycle schedule). Citizenship Mega Workshop on Saturday

The New Americans Campaign will provide assistance to complete the citizenship application to anyone eligible. A coalition of legal service providers and volunteers have come together to assist eligible legal permanent residents (LPRs) become U.S. citizens by completing naturalization applications. The legal service is completely free. However, there is a USCIS $680 application fee. USCIS may waive the $680 fee if you receive food stamps, Medicaid or SSI. To apply for the fee waiver you must have the letter of benefits in English from DCF and/or the Social Security Office. Meet Rolando Mora

Rolando, Roly as he likes to be called, is a Tax Managing Director at KPMG, LLP and has been involved as a HUF volunteer leader for more than three years. He currently serves as a Board Member as well as on the Finance Committee. Roly’s passion for joining HUF has roots close to home. Inspired by his parents, both Cuban pharmacists who had to rebuild their life in the U.S., he says “I have their passion for hard work and being the best I can be. My parents sacrificed a lot to ensure we would have a better opportunity at life.” He and his siblings are all first generation Americans and are all professionals – accountant, pharmacist and attorneys. Roly is involved with HUF because he identifies with the clients we serve. “HUF client families are going through the same struggles my parents went through. They are following their dreams of creating and living a better life.”

Lauren is 16 years old, she's in 11th grade and is being raised by her dad since her mom's death in 2010. She is part of Hispanic Unity's Unity 4Teens program funded by the Children's Services Council of Broward County. Were it not for this program, her life would be much different. 

The Children’s Services Council of Broward County invests more than $60 Million annually on our children in Broward County!

In 2012/2013 the Children's Services Council of Broward County supported nearly 100,000 children through 153 programs by 87 organizations plus 40 school-based health programs.  

The Children’s Services of Broward County (CSC) is an independent taxing authority established by Broward County voters in 2000. Since its creation, the Children’s Services Council has touched the lives of thousands of children in our community – every year.

The CSC’s mission is to provide leadership, advocacy and resources necessary to enhance the lives of the children of Broward County and empower them to become responsible, productive adults.

The organization funds hundreds of programs that serve children and families, advocates for policies that protect the interests of future generations and provides leadership that brings the child-serving community together.

The CSC works with Community Partners to help “Turn the Curve” in a positive direction on issues like:

•             Maternal and Child Health

•             Family Strengthening

•             After-School and Out-of-School Time

•             Kinship Care

•             Youth Leadership, Advocacy and Employment

•             Support for Youth and Families with Special Needs

Getting Your Tax Return Completed – What You Need:

There are 18 sites including the Mobile Resource Center (a traveling 34 ft. RV, where tax payers can come aboard and have their taxes prepared). In order to have a quality experience and have your taxes completed at time of visit, it is important to bring the necessary documentation.

Documents to bring to your Tax Preparation Appointmwent

  • Original Social Security Cards for you and any dependents
  • A government issued Photo ID
  • Tax information such as W-2 and/ or 1099, 1098-Mortgage, 1098-T or any tax documentation related to your specific income or expense.
  • Interest and dividend statements from banks (Form 1099)
  • Remember to bring  day care expenses with the provider’s EIN and amount paid (If applicable)
  • If you are self-employed, list detailing income & expenses with the support documentation
  • 2013 Tax return (optional)
  • Blank check from your bank account (for the purpose of direct deposit of your refund)
  • If you were a victim of identity theft in previous years, please be sure you have your PIN number with you; otherwise we cannot complete your return.
  • Any other relevant information about income and expenses

Unity 4Teens on College Road Trip

Twenty-six youth from HUF's Unity 4Teens program are on a road trip this week - their lives will be forever changed. The 2014 College Tour is a two-night three-day trip via chartered transportation. Students departed Monday, March 24th and return on Wednesday, March 26th. During the three day trip the students visit Florida Gulf Coast University, University of Florida (UF), Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University (FAMU), University of North Florida, University of Central Florida, and Bethune Cookman University. When the students return from the college tour they will work on completing their college essays and finalizing their college/university applications. 

HUF's youth development program is powered by the Children's Services Council of Broward. The career/college readiness program - and the 2014 College Tour - is made possible by support from the TK Foundation.

Congratulations NSU -- 50 years in South Florida!

Since its establishment in Fort Lauderdale, Florida in 1964, NSU has grown from an initial student body of 17 graduate students to the 9th largest private not-for-profit university in the nation serving 27,000 undergraduate, first professional and post graduate students.

          

The university’s alumni base is 162,000 strong and growing by more than 7,000 each year.

Hispanic Unity of Florida (HUF) has been a long-time community partner with NSU and we have mutually benefited from the relationship. But the most benefited have been the 20,000+ annual clients served by Hispanic Unity. Our joint projects have included a Dental Clinic, work with our senior activity center, diabetes research with the Pharmacy School, immunization drives and health fairs. This year, HUF and NSU have partnered to bring to life STEM careers to Miramar High School students whom we serve through our Unity 4Teens Youth Development program.
